School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT)
If you prefer to spend more of your training time in the classroom, the SCITT programme may suit you.
As a trainee, you would be based in series of schools (usually three) and follow a programme designed and delivered by these schools. Entry requirements and funding eligibility are similar to the PGCE.
Entry requirements
You will need either a physics or physics-rich undergraduate degree and a physics A-level (or equivalent) or be asked to take a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course to be accepted.
Duration
The course usually lasts for one year and is full-time.
Qualifications
You will gain Qualified Teacher Status at the end of your SCITT. Some will also award you a PGCE.
Bursary
UK and EU resident students are eligible for a training bursary. The bursary amount is determined on your degree classification. If you have a first class degree you will receive £20,000, a 2:1 £15,000 and a 2:2 £12000.
These bursaries are tax-free and paid in monthly instalments during your course. For full details refer to the TDA’s bursary information.
Please note though that, in addition to this, you will be charged tuition fees by your SCITT provider. The exact cost varies between providers.
Applications
In most cases, you need to apply for SCITT courses through the graduate teacher training registry (GTTR), although some SCITT providers require direct applications. You can apply to up to four different providers, in order of preference. Here is a list of SCITT providers.
