The 2008 Impact Factors, just released by Thomson Reuters, show significant growth for many journals published by IOP Publishing, the Institute of Physics (IOP)’s publishing company, for the fifth year running.

IOP Publishing

This year, 34 of the titles published by IOP have seen an increase in citations on last year, 17 titles have had an increase of over 10%, 5 journals have an Impact Factor over 5 and over 40% of have Impact Factors above 2.000.

This success reflects the quality and visibility of IOP journals, and shows that researchers who publish with us are in the right place to be cited by their peers.

Some of the best-performing IOP Publishing journals this year are:

  • 'Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics': which has increased by 51% to 5.270 making it the number one original research journal in the world in the nuclear physics category for the second year in a row.
  • 'Nanotechnology': has increased its Impact Factor to 3.44. This is a major achievement as the journal became a weekly publication in 2007, reflecting its ongoing commitment to publishing only the very best papers in the field.
  • 'Journal of Neural Engineering':  has posted a notable first Impact Factor of 2.737.
  • 'Classical and Quantum Gravity': has increased its Impact Factor to 3.035.
  • 'Reports on Progress in Physics': has increased its Impact Factor to 12.090.

Several journals published by IOP in conjunction with partner organizations have also seen notable growth in citations including:

  • 'Physics-Uspekhi (Advances in Physical Sciences)': has increased by 22% to 2.471. This is the highest impact factor among all Russian journals in physics. The journal is co-published by Uspekhi Fizicheskikh Nauk and Turpion Ltd and distributed by IOP Publishing.
  • 'Physics in Medicine' and 'Biology and Physiological Measurement': Both journals have increased their Impact Factors by over 10% to 2.784 and 1.691 respectively. IOP co-publishes these titles with the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine.

Jerry Cowhig, Managing Director of IOP Publishing said: “We are delighted with this year’s results and wish to thank our authors, referees and editorial boards for their vital contributions. We look forward to continuing to work with the scientific community to build on this success in the future.”
