Nine of the Institute’s members have been recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours for their contributions to science, education and industry.

Prof. Bill Wakeham, the vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton received a knighthood for services to chemical engineering and to education.

A CBE was awarded to Peter Saraga, the vice-president of the Royal Academy of Engineering and past president of the Institute of Physics, for services to science and to engineering. Prof. Lynn Gladden of the University of Cambridge’s department of chemical engineering also received a CBE for services to science.

Prof. Helen Gleeson, the head of the school of physics and astronomy at the University of Manchester, was awarded an OBE for services to science. The honour also went to Prof. Katherine Sykes of the University of Bristol for services to science and technology; to Mohammed Hossain of the National Physical Laboratory for services to industry; and to Robert William Hunt for services to science and to young people.

MBEs went to Michael de Podesta of the National Physical Laboratory for services to science, and to BBC radio’s science editor Deborah Cohen for services to science and to broadcasting.
